Bologna
I was probably around 12 when it happened. Our family was on vacation somewhere, New Hampshire maybe. We were in some small town and it must have been past lunch time and there was no place to eat. We had to resort to buying sandwiches in some little convenient store, you know the ones cut in half and pre-packed and sealed in plastic with the sandwich meet prominently displayed so you know exactly what quality you are in for. Well I picked my self out a Bologna sandwich and the thin slices of Bologna must have added up to about 1/2 an inch in thickness. I can still clearly remember thinking "that was the greatest Bologna sandwich ever" and in fact I made it know to my parents how much I enjoyed it. I think Mom said something like "that's good Hun, I'm glad you enjoyed it." She probably could barely manage to stomach her own.

When I was about..oh...fourteen maybe, I also had a pivotal moment with bologna. I went to a new friend's house for lunch--and she made us fried bologna sandwiches--it was the most horrifying thing I ever had. Really, can you think of more things more disgusting than fried, processed meat product? Of course, I ate it.

OK, so I don't have a bologna sandwich story, but here's my "memorable childhood sandwich" tale. I was supposed to go sailing with a friend's dad and her sibligs. En route, the trunk of their van popped up and seriously cracked the windshield. (Sidebar: Keep in mind, this is before cell phones, and he had a van with 5 kids in it. Fortunately, he could drive with it.) Since we couldn't go sailing and had to head home, we had the picnic lunch he had packed for the boat in the van. They were roast beef and swiss sandwiches on white bread with mayonnaise; in my house we never had mayonnaise OR white bread. I took one bite and was absolutely hooked- it was so creamy and rich! To this day, I love mayo on pretty much any sandwich.
